Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal treatment is the prevention and maintenance of periodontal disease (also known as gum disease). Scaling and root planing, or periodontal cleaning, is similar to a dental cleaning, but requires removing plaque and tartar from underneath gums, where they’ve settled on the roots. If you exhibit gingivitis (the beginning of gum disease), then scaling and root planing may help you avoid the damages of gum disease.

Patients who have already developed gum disease may also require routine periodontal maintenance, such as more frequent preventive dental visits. Otherwise, gum disease can quickly grow worse, destroy the periodontal tissues and jawbone structure that support your teeth, and lead to the loss of a single, multiple, or several teeth.
